The Musée Marmottan Monet has invited artist Anne Laure Sacriste to take part in the seventh opus of its Unexpected Dialogues. The artist has chosen a painting by Edouard Manet, a portrait of Berthe Morisot: “Portrait de Berthe Morisot étendue” (1873). In choosing this work, Anne Laure Sacriste questions the gaze of a man (Edouard Manet) on a woman (Berthe Morisot).
The painting reveals the desire, sensuality and complicity that united the two artists. Anne Laure Sacriste puts these qualifiers into perspective by proposing her own vision of this face in a heliogravure that she compares with the original painting. The portrait is reinterpreted by decentering the face, which becomes the reminiscence of a ghostly image appearing behind a black veil, a kind of figurative monochrome.
